Bus Ducts An Eletrical Power Distribution tool

BUS DUCTS:

                Bus ducts are the Combination of the bus bars of aluminium or Copper that is designed with required Current rating for the power transfer and the required protection for user during its installation and operation.

  1. Air insulated bus duct or Non Segregated Bus duct
  2. Sandwich bus duct or Segregated bus duct

NON SEGREGATED BUS DUCT

PART 1 GENERAL

A. The requirements of the Contract, Division [1] [01], and Division [16] [26] apply to work in this Section.

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Metal Enclosed Non-Segregated phase bus duct 600V and above

1.02 REFERENCES

The bus duct in this specification are designed, manufactured and tested according to latest revision of the following standards (unless otherwise noted).
A. ANSI/IEEE C37.23, Metal-Enclosed Bus and Calculating Losses in Isolated-Bus, Guide for
B. ANSI/NFPA 70, National Electrical Code
C. NEMA 250 Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum)

1.03 DEFINITIONS
             Non-segregated phase bus duct shall have all phase conductors in a common enclosure with an air space between phases. There are no metallic barriers between phase conductors of adjacent phases.

1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Busway shall be a totally enclosed, [indoor] [outdoor] low-impedance system.
B. Material and installation shall comply with all applicable codes, recommended practices, and standards of ANSI, IEEE, and NEMA. All bus duct components shall be UL listed. Arrangements, details, and location shall be as indicated in drawings. 

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. Manufacturer shall provide copies of following documents to owner for review and evaluation in accordance with general requirements of Division [1] [01] and Division [16] [26]:
B. Product Data on specified product;
C. Shop Drawings on specified product including drawings with plan and elevations views for clarity.
D. Design Data, detailed component data on specified product

1.06 PROJECT RECORD DOCUMENTS

A. Maintain an up-to-date set of Contract documents. Note any and all revisions and deviations that are made during the course of the project.

1.07 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE DATA

A. Manufacturer shall provide copies of installation, operation and maintenance procedures to owner in accordance with general requirements of Division [1] [01] and Division [16] [26].
B. Submit operation and maintenance data based on factory and field testing, operation and maintenance of specified product.

1.08 QUALITY ASSURANCE (QUALIFICATIONS)

A. Manufacturer shall have specialized in the manufacture and assembly of low-voltage bus duct for 25 years.
B. Installer shall have specialized in installing low voltage metal enclosed bus ducts with [minimum _ years documented experience].

1.09 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, protect, and handle products in accordance with recommended practices listed in manufacturer's Installation and Maintenance Manuals.
B. Deliver each bus duct section in individual shipping cartons for ease of handling. Each bus duct section shall be wrapped for protection. Each bus duct section shall be identified with the same section number as shown on vendor drawings.
C. Inspect and report concealed damage to carrier within specified time.
D. Store in a clean, dry space. Maintain factory protection or cover with heavy canvas or plastic to keep out dirt, water, construction debris, and traffic. (Heat enclosures to prevent condensation.)
E. Handle in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions to avoid damaging equipment, installed devices, and finish. Lift only by installed lifting eyes.

1.10 PROJECT CONDITIONS (SITE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS)

A. Follow (standards) service conditions before, during and after bus duct installation.
B. Low-voltage Metal Enclosed bus ducts shall be located in well-ventilated areas, free from excess humidity, dust and dirt and away from hazardous materials. Ambient temperature of area will be between minus 30 and plus 40 degrees C. Indoor locations shall be protected to prevent moisture from entering enclosure. The altitude of the installation is ________ft above sea level. The maximum wind velocity at site is ________miles per hour. The bus duct shall be designed for seismic zone _______.

1.11 WARRANTY

A. Manufacturer warrants equipment to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for 1 year from date of installation or 18 months from date of purchase, whichever occurs first.

1.12 EXTRA MATERIALS

1.13 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

A. Make all necessary field measurements to verify that equipment shall fit in allocated space in full compliance with minimum required clearances specified in National Electrical Code.








PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MANUFACTURER

A. General Electric Company products have been used as the basis for design. Other manufacturers' products of equivalent quality, dimensions and operating features may be acceptable, at the Engineer's discretion, if they comply with all requirements specified or indicated in these Contract documents.

2.02 SYSTEMS

A. Furnish 600V totally enclosed indoor or outdoor metal enclosed non-segregated phase bus duct as indicated in drawings.

2.03 COMPONENTS

Refer to Drawings for: actual layout and location of equipment and components; current ratings of devices, bus bars, and components; voltage ratings of devices, components and assemblies; and other required details.
A. Bus duct housing shall be primed and painted [steel] [corrosion resistant aluminum] [stainless steel]. Housing shall be totally enclosed for protection against mechanical damage and dust accumulation. All indoor hardware shall be plated to prevent corrosion, all outdoor hardware shall be stainless steel.
1. Outdoor bus duct shall be provided with a peaked top cover.
2. All top cover joints and joints with end flanges are to be gasketed and protected with a metallic sealing strip.
3. Removable covers shall be provided throughout the bus run, both top and bottom for access to bus joints and supports without the need for disassembling the bus duct. Welded covers are unacceptable.
4. All surfaces [except stainless steel] shall have a primer coat applied to a 0.2 mil minimum dry film thickness. All surfaces [except stainless steel] shall have a finish coat of 1.0 mil minimum dry film thickness.




B. Outdoor, totally enclosed non-ventilated housings shall be fitted with screened breathers and space heaters in sufficient quantity and rating to minimize condensation. Space heaters shall be completely factory wired except shipping split connection. Heaters shall be thermostatically controlled. Heaters wiring shall be terminated in a junction box at the end designated on the drawings and shall be extended to the specified power source by the installing contractor. Heaters shall be rated at 240V, 500 watts and operated at 120V to maintain low heater surface temperature and prolonged life.
C. Insulating materials: Bus ducts operating at 600V or below will not require an insulation material applied to the conductors or joints. Adequate air space shall be provided between phases, and phase to ground to operate without insulation. Bus ducts operating above 600V shall have fully insulated conductors and shall be non-hygroscopic and flame retardant, rated for continuous operation at 105° C (class 105). The insulation level of the combined system shall meet or exceed the requirements in Table 5 of ANSI C37.23. Insulation at joints shall be molded vinyl boots or appropriate insulating tapes.
D. Bus duct amperage and short circuit rating shall be as indicated on the drawings.
E. Bus bars shall be [copper –ETP 110 ASTM designationB187] [Aluminum 6101-T61 ASTM designation 8236].
F. Conductors shall not exceed total temperature limit of 105°C when operated at rated current.
G. Temperature rise at any point in bus duct shall not exceed 65°C over the 40°C ambient. Enclosure total temperature limit shall not exceed 80°C.
H. [The bus duct housing may not be used in place of an internal ground bar or cable. A separate ground bus or cable shall be provided on the inside or outside of the enclosure. The separate ground bus when indicated shall terminate to the equipment or the equipment ground pad.] 
I. Bus conductors shall be rigidly supported within the enclosure and shall be braced to withstand the thermal and mechanical effects with out damage or deformations, and the short circuit currents specified on the drawings. Supports for 600V through 5kV systems shall be non-hygroscopic track resistant, flame retardant glass reinforced polyester blocks. Silicone rubber inserts shall be supplied between the conductors and the support blocks to eliminate the air gap between them.
J. Where bus duct passes through walls, roofs, or floors, the bus duct shall include an internal vapor/fire barrier for [1/2 hour] [4 hour] fire rating.
K. Enclosure joints shall be provided with adjustment to accommodate site variances and linear expansion of up to .25 inch per foot.


L. Contact surfaces of bolted copper joints shall be silver plated and shall be tin plated for aluminum joints.


M. Standard hardware shall be high strength plated steel with lock washers for copper connections and Belleville washers for aluminum connections.


N. Bus duct supports shall be [indoor trapeze type] [outdoor column type with base plates for attaching to Purchaser's foundations] [knee-brace type for wall mounting].

2.04 ACCESSORIES

A. Expansion fittings for:
1. Shall be provided at each building expansion joint

2.05 TESTING


A. Manufacturer may be requested to submit test reports showing compliance with the following ANSI C37.23 design tests or may submit design tests performed on similar ratings along with technical data to substantiate compliance of the equipment being furnished:

Water Tightness


2.06 FINISH

A. ANSI-61 gray enamel.








PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that bus ducts are ready to install.
B. Verify field measurements are as [shown on Drawings] [instructed by manufacturer].
C. Verify that required utilities are available, in proper location and ready for use.
D. Beginning of installation means installer accepts conditions.

3.02 LOCATION
3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Additional provisions and editing may be required for this part.
B. Install per manufacturer's instructions.
C. Install required safety labels.

3.04 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Inspect installed bus ducts for anchoring, alignment, grounding and physical damage.
B. Check tightness of all accessible mechanical and electrical connections with calibrated torque wrench. Minimum acceptable values are specified in manufacturer's instructions.
C. Megger bus ducts using [500] [1000] [2500] VDC Megger. Megger and record readings for phase to phase, phase to ground. Individual lengths should be at least [3] megohm(s). 


3.05 CLEANING

A. Clean interiors and enclosures to remove construction debris, dirt, shipping materials.
B. Repaint scratched or marred exterior surfaces to match original finish.
